Central Figure
Jeffrey Epstein
Financier / Sex Offender · American · Deceased (August 10, 2019)
Jeffrey Edward Epstein (January 20, 1953 -- August 10, 2019) began his career as a mathematics teacher at the Dalton School in Manhattan before moving into finance in the late 1970s. He joined Bear Stearns as a junior employee and rose to limited partner before departing in 1981 to establish his own financial management firm. He cultivated a client list that remained largely secret throughout his life, claiming to work exclusively with clients worth over one billion dollars. His precise sources of wealth were never fully explained or verified.
Epstein maintained residences in Manhattan, Palm Beach, New Mexico, Paris, and a private island in the US Virgin Islands -- Little Saint James -- that he owned outright. He cultivated an extraordinary network of influential contacts across politics, science, finance, and media over several decades, using his wealth and properties to embed himself among the powerful.
He was arrested in Palm Beach in 2005 following a complaint involving a 14-year-old girl. A subsequent investigation identified over 30 additional alleged victims. In 2008, despite federal prosecutors preparing charges that could have resulted in a life sentence, he negotiated a controversial plea agreement under which he pleaded guilty to two state charges, registered as a sex offender, and served 13 months in county jail with extensive work release privileges. The agreement included a non-prosecution clause that shielded unnamed co-conspirators from federal charges.
He was arrested again in July 2019 on federal sex trafficking charges. He was found dead in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center on August 10, 2019. His death was ruled a suicide by hanging under circumstances that have remained the subject of significant public scrutiny.
