Trump University operated from 2005 to 2011, offering seminars and programmes in real estate investing at prices up to $35,000. It was not an accredited institution, could not grant degrees, and was ordered by the state of New York to stop calling itself a university.

Former students filed multiple class action lawsuits alleging they were misled about the quality of the instruction and the credentials of the instructors. The New York Attorney General pursued a separate fraud case. In November 2016, weeks after Trump was elected president, his team settled the lawsuits for $25 million without admitting wrongdoing.

Trump had previously said he would never settle, calling the lawsuit politically motivated. He settled.
