Trump Mortgage LLC was announced in April 2006 at what was, in hindsight, roughly the peak of the US housing bubble. Trump predicted the company would be "a great company" and suggested he knew the finance world "probably better than anybody." The company closed in September 2007 as the subprime mortgage market began its collapse -- approximately one year before the global financial crisis.
The timing was extraordinary in both directions: launched at the top of the bubble, closed just before the crash became impossible to deny. The housing market subsequently suffered one of the worst collapses in American history. Trump Mortgage LLC did not participate in the recovery.
